Hey guys! I’m so excited you are here and want to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself and The Teenpreneur Conference.
When I was 16 my mom dropped the news. I had to start my high school project. I had known it was coming but had hoped maybe I would escape the fate that had befallen my older brother. Alas, it was not to be so…
My mom required her kids (both of us) to do some sort of meaningful high school project. My brother started a non-profit organization with another teen. I knew that I wanted to do something different and mom suggested some sort of website. Sounded good to me so I started thinking about what I wanted to blog about.
After two months I still had no idea. We discussed blogging about competitive rock climbing but I already spent so much of my life in the gym climbing and I really didn’t want to spend more hours writing about it.
Unfortunately my parents were going through a divorce and mom needed to get her finances on track. She borrowed a book from the library called The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. As fate would have it they only had it on audio book so I had to listen to it in the car on the way back and forth to the gym 4 times a week. And I’m not saying I was angry but lets just say I really wanted to listen to Taylor Swift during that time not some old guy talking about money. Okay. I was super mad…
Surprisingly I loved the book. It made so much sense to me and sounded a lot like what my parents had taught me through the years. I did a little bit of research and couldn’t find much out there for teens and certainly not anything by a teen for teens who wanted to learn how to do things like get a great part time job, go to college debt free, get great deals when shopping, budgeting basics and how to start their own business.
This is when I decided to start TeensGotCents as my high school project. It took months to get everything ready but finally, in January 2013, we got the site up. It’s been three years now and what started as a high school project is now my full time job. I cannot believe the opportunities that have come my way because of the site.
One of the biggest reasons that I believe my business has grown is because in 2013 mom and I attended a conference called FinCon in St. Louis. FinCon is a large conference for personal finance bloggers to get together, take classes to help their business grow, and support each other. Phillip Taylor of PT Money is the founder and has created this amazing environment where competitors become each others biggest allies. And when everyone is helping each other everyone does better. It’s really amazing.
Which brings me to The Teenpreneur Conference. For quite some time I have dreamed about having a conference for teens. At first my idea was to do a personal finance conference. But the more I thought about it the more I realized a conference on how to budget your money and save for retirement probably wouldn’t be something most teens would want to attend. I don’t even want to go to that conference!
So last summer I started really brainstorming about an idea for a conference. I believe that starting your own business is the single best way a teen can learn about money and how to start their life now. The more I thought about it I realized that there are a ton of teen entrepreneurs out there that would probably love to share ideas, learn how to start or grow their business, make new friends, and build a community of other like minded teens who don’t want to wait until they are adults to get going on everything!
If you come to the conference (and I hope you will!) you will learn how to successfully start a business. If you already have a business you will learn practical steps on how to grow that business. In between we will have fun, get to know other teen entrepreneurs, and speak with organizations who can offer us the help we need.
Of course, there’s going to be a party on Friday night. And I’m not saying that you should come to the conference just for the party but….
Sign up for email updates and I will keep you informed about the speakers we have lined up and all of the other details you will want to know about
the party the great sessions you can choose from at the conference.
Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions or just want to introduce yourself.
See you in June! Let’s do this!
